Wardell McNeal was born in the Philippines and raised in San Diego, California. He studied Industrial Design at San Francisco State University, a background that continues to inform the structural complexity and spatial inventiveness of his paintings. He is now based in Oakland and represented by pt.2 Gallery, where he has developed a sustained solo practice over several years.
McNeal is largely self-taught as a painter. He has described approaching painting empirically — studying the techniques of figures such as Picasso and Caravaggio through books and references, then building his own visual language through observation and practice.
