Morgan Corbitt (born 1997, Los Angeles) is a painter based in San Francisco. She earned a BA in Studio Art from San Francisco State University in 2020. After graduating, she built her practice in the Bay Area, working as a studio assistant for established local artists — a path that, as Bass & Reiner has noted, reflects her deep commitment to the labor and process of artmaking. She has been represented by both Good Mother Gallery (Oakland and Los Angeles) and Bass & Reiner (San Francisco), and works from a warehouse studio in downtown San Francisco.
Corbitt has exhibited across the Bay Area and Los Angeles, presenting solo shows at Good Mother Gallery in Oakland and at Bass & Reiner, where she mounted Waters of March in fall 2024 — her most prominent exhibition to date. Her work has been recognized by both Bay Area and Los Angeles gallery communities since her debut solo show in 2021.
Corbitt works in oil paint through a three-stage process: she photographs scenes and objects encountered in daily life, assembles collages from those images, and then translates the collages into finished paintings. Her source material ranges from personal cellphone snapshots to screenshots and product photographs harvested from Amazon and other online marketplaces — what she calls “poor images,” visual material that feels simultaneously familiar and unsettling when rendered at scale in oil.
Her compositions are often rigidly Byzantine: forms grow or shrink in scale based on their thematic importance rather than spatial logic, and elements are positioned for dramatic rather than naturalistic effect. The resulting paintings sit in a metaphysical register — objects are juxtaposed across a flat pictorial space, often against dark grounds, in arrangements that carry emotional weight without resolving into clear narrative.
