Luka Amaru Fernandez was born in 2000 in San Jose, California, and raised in Lima, Peru, later attending an arts-focused high school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Self-taught, he began working professionally as an artist in 2016 through freelance commission work, developing a practice in draftsmanship, visual development, character design, and life drawing alongside his personal work in watercolor, ink, pastels, and oil paint.
Fernandez now lives and works in San Francisco, where he teaches drawing and painting fundamentals at the Art School of SF Bay and facilitates events at Queer Arts Featured in the Castro. His personal work has been shown at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts and, in 2026, at Queer Arts Featured and Root Division, both in San Francisco.
His practice engages with questions of ambiguity in racial and gender identity, drawing on ancestral memory and Andean myth alongside a broader interest in what it means to remain a traditional picture-maker in an era when images can be conjured instantly by AI.
Fernandez works primarily in watercolor, ink, pastels, and oil paint, producing a painterly, lyrical, and layered body of work rooted in magical realism and the sublime. Animals, zoomorphic figures, and anthropomorphic beings recur throughout the work — entities poised at the threshold of personhood that evoke otherness while inviting the viewer’s empathy. Synesthesia, spiritual imagery, and luminous, saturated color run through the paintings, which Fernandez describes as extensions of his own lived experience of ambiguity in race and gender rather than illustrations of external subjects.
