Janet Delaney was born in 1952 in Compton, California. She relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1971 and went on to earn a BFA with honors from San Francisco State University in 1975 and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1981. She lives and works in Berkeley, California.
Delaney built a significant teaching career alongside her photographic practice, serving as a professor at the College of San Mateo from 1980 to 1991 and as a guest instructor at Santa Clara University and the San Francisco Art Institute. She held an adjunct faculty position in Visual Studies at the University of California, Berkeley for fifteen years. She received three National Endowment for the Arts grants, the James D. Phelan Award in Photography, a San Francisco Arts Commission residency, and a 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship.
Her work is held in permanent collections at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, the Oakland Museum of California, the Pilara Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, the Musée de la Photographie à Charleroi in Belgium, and the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro.
