Finneas Etcher (born 1997) is a San Francisco-based painter whose work explores how relationships and domestic spaces shape one another. His paintings depict lived-in interiors with reverence for mess, treating the home as a place where care and neglect quietly accumulate. Drawing from personal experiences navigating co-living, caretaking, and autism, Etcher’s practice centers on gestures of care—especially the awkward, strained, or uncertain ones that rarely appear in idealized representations of domestic life.
Etcher has worked as a private art instructor in San Francisco since 2023 and has served as a gallery manager and educator in arts organizations across California and Michigan. His background in arts advocacy includes curating and installing exhibitions in collaboration with neurodiverse and disabled artists, extending the ethos of care that runs through his paintings into his community practice.
In 2026, Etcher received the Art Bae Award, a finishing grant for Bay Area artists, juried by photographer Lucas Foglia, curator Aaron Harbour, and artist Inga Bard.
Etcher works in casein on gessoed wood panels finished with minimal varnish. The choice of casein is deliberate: its deeply matte surface echoes the flat quality of domestic furniture, and his panels are designed to settle quietly into cramped homes, remaining legible from tight angles. His interiors are populated with the accumulations of shared life—food, furniture, visits, meals—rendered with attention to the weight of ordinary presence.
His paintings investigate the intersection of identity, space, and community, locating meaning in the unremarkable rhythms of domestic cohabitation. Individual works—Dinner at the Co-op, Sickbed, Sophie’s Visit, Reading Together—approach the home not as backdrop but as active participant in shaping the people who inhabit it.
