Devra Fox (b. 1989, Seattle, WA) is a visual artist and printmaker based in San Francisco. She earned a BA in Studio Art from Bard College in 2012 and an MFA in Visual Art from Columbia University in 2016, where she received the Morty Frank Travel Fellowship from the Leroy Neiman Center for Print Studies. Fox also holds the Christina R. Tarsell Award for Studio Arts from Bard College. In 2018, she was awarded the Tending Space Fellowship for Artists from the Hemera Foundation. She has undertaken residencies at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, Pocoapoco in Oaxaca, Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY, Vermont Studio Center, and Cow House Studios in Wexford, Ireland.
Fox has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo exhibitions at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, Hesse Flatow in New York, and Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as group exhibitions at venues in Paris, Berlin, and Shanghai. Her work has been reviewed in Two Coats of Paint, FUKT Magazine, Art Maze Mag, and XIBT Magazine.
Fox works primarily in graphite and red lead on paper, producing meticulous, monochromatic drawings that blend observed natural forms with surrealist invention. Her practice is deeply meditative: through repetitive mark-making she builds dense, luminous surfaces in which veins and branches, roots and limbs, botanical structures and human anatomy slip between one another. The resulting imagery occupies what critic Jonathan Goodman has called an “eccentric realism”—referential but purposefully refusing to mimic the outside world. Botanical containment, bodily vulnerability, and the physical manifestation of emotion are recurring preoccupations; stones (carrying resonance from Jewish memorial tradition), wishbones, reliquaries, and furniture made of roots all appear as charged objects that hold memory, faith, and desire. Fox’s background as a printmaker shapes her approach to paper itself as an unforgiving, demanding surface that rewards precision and immediacy.
