Angela Berry is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, musician and archivist based in San Francisco. She received a BA in fine art from Sewanee: The University of the South in 2008 and spent the following years in New Orleans, where she served as Curatorial Assistant and Visual Arts Coordinator at the Contemporary Arts Center from 2011 to 2013 and co-organized the Hand-In-Glove conference. She was an artist-member of the T-Lot and The Front collectives between 2010 and 2015, and her 2013 solo exhibition left out at The Front was reviewed in Art in America.
Berry moved to the Bay Area for graduate study at California College of the Arts, completing an MFA in Fine Art in 2016 and a second MFA in Visual & Critical Studies in 2017, supported throughout by the Bernard Osher Foundation Scholarship. Her Visual & Critical Studies thesis, W(H)ETTING THE WORD, took up the tension between image and text through Roni Horn’s Still Water.
She has held artist and research residencies at the Vermont Studio Center (2013), Vatnasafn / Library of Water in Stykkisholmur, Iceland (2017), and the Volcan Mountain Foundation (2018). She has taught at California College of the Arts, the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Northwest College of Art at Willamette University, and Sewanee, and works as studio assistant for the Estate of Larry Sultan. Her work has been covered in Art in America, Artforum, and Art Papers.
Berry works across photography, video, installation, and writing, with an archivist’s attention to how objects and documents come loose from the contexts that made them. Her practice examines what she has described as the varying degrees of drama between land use and development, and much of the work begins with material that has been discarded, overlooked, or displaced: the street detritus photographed and 3D-printed for left out, the volcanic terrain walked and filmed in Iceland, and the century of reenactments and mutations of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial she has been assembling as The Devolution Daybooks.
The images tend toward slow, deliberate processes. East of the Sun, a series on fortification, was printed in platinum-palladium and featured in Routledge’s manual on the process; the research residencies have produced essays as readily as objects, including writing for the journal Feral Fabric. More recently Berry has extended the practice into music, recording as Leeward Sands.
Berry has also exhibited at The Ginza Art Lab, Tokyo; the San Francisco Arts Commission; Minnesota Street Project, San Francisco; the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco; CTRL+SHFT, Oakland; Slide Space 123 Gallery, Mills College, Oakland; Mass Gallery, Austin; Get This Gallery, Atlanta; Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, St. Louis; Biggin Gallery, Auburn University; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Contemporary Arts Center and Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, New Orleans; and Vox Populi, Philadelphia.
