Amy Balkin is a San Francisco–based conceptual and public artist whose practice combines cross-disciplinary research and social critique to generate alternatives for understanding the public domain outside current legal and discursive systems. Working at the intersection of environmental justice, property law, and climate politics, she examines society’s relationship to land, the atmosphere, the ocean, and other natural resources—questioning who is entitled to nominate and enforce protections for shared commons, and who ultimately benefits from them.
Balkin earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA in New Genres from Stanford University in 2003. Her long-term collaborative projects deploy legal, bureaucratic, and economic mechanisms as artistic materials, proposing imaginative frameworks that challenge assumptions about ownership and the boundaries of the public sphere. In 2007 she received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally at dOCUMENTA (13), Centre Pompidou-Metz, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), and Nottingham Contemporary, and locally at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco.
Balkin works across archival practice, sound, public intervention, and installation, initiating processes that often unfold over years or decades. Rather than producing discrete objects, she deploys existing legal and economic systems—purchasing land, retiring carbon offsets, soliciting contributed objects from climate-threatened communities worldwide—to expose the assumptions embedded in those systems. Her practice inhabits the space between art and advocacy, treating bureaucratic procedures as creative and political acts. A persistent thread across her work is the attempt to establish or protect commons: atmospheric, terrestrial, and cultural.
